Figure painting workshop with Keith Dewell

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th  December, 2010 .

Keith Dewell is a Masterful Painter and Draftsman. Winner of the Bale award in the early Nineties, he currently teaches at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, The MacGregor summer and winter schools in Toowoomba, and numerous workshops throughout Tasmania, South Australia, New South Wales, and Regional Queensland. His work has recently been exhibited at the NSW Parliament Building in Sydney, and he is exhibiting at the Redcliffe Regional Gallery in December in the ‘Honouring tradition. In association with Atelier Art Classes and Salisbury Studios Queensland Incorporated, Keith has developed a workshop which is aimed at the artist who wishes to refine their approach to painting the figure. The Figure Painting Workshop will focus on:

• ·         Tone relationships
• ·         Warm and Cool colour relationships
• ·         Efficient painting of the figure
• ·         Organisation of the palette

In the tone aspect you will learn how to simplify and organise the values (tones) to create the 3D illusion.

In the colour aspect you will learn how the warm and cool relationships work in their context to enhance the 3D illusion.

This workshop will give you a way of organising your pallet, making it easier to judge subtle shifts in tone and colour.

On the Saturday you will paint two poses, with special attention to establishing an efficient way of painting the figure.

The Sunday will be more intensive with 4 poses providing you with an opportunity to reinforce the lessons of the previous day.

Workshops will run from 10.00am until 4.00pm on both days

The paintings we do will be small (20 or 30cm high figures), for which you will need to provide the following materials:

• ·      Colours - White, Burnt Sienna, Raw umber, a bright red and yellow, Ultramarine Blue.
• ·      Each painting will begin with a clean pallet and brushes, therefore, enough turps  brush wash, 2 or 3 jars with lids for the turps and newspaper/rag to clean the brushes after each pose. PLEASE NOTE, only odourless solvent may be used in the studio.
• ·      2 pallet knives, paper towels or rags to dry the brushes
• ·      6 to 10 well behaved hog hair brushes that will paint shapes and edges accurately!
• ·      A minimum of two pieces of 10 or 12 0z Canvas approx. 600x400mm. This can be purchased  from us on the day, or provide your own

We are situated approximately 10 kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD

The cost of the workshop is $195 which covers both days. A $100 deposit will secure your booking, with the balance to be paid on the day.  If you would like to attend, please pay the deposit as soon as possible.  Bookings for easel positions are limited to twelve. We can accept a bank transfer, or cash. Please contact us for details.
